As a graduate of Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Vermont, Hank Wall has used his experience and training there to shape Wood Wise Design & Remodeling. In the 2014/15 school course catalog, Hank was featured in the alumni profiles. Here’s what Hank has to say about his time at Yestermorrow and its impact on his business:

I was a 30-year old carpenter when I moved to Vermont in 1981 and started working for Yestermorrow. The school was an infant and local experts were teaching building and design. Mac Rood, Jim Sanford, David Sellers, Kathy Meyer, Bill Maclay and, of course, John Connell were all there in Warren, sharing what they knew with folks from all over the country. I was paid enough to qualify as staff but I was clearly a student of design/build. It was the best job in town – and it came with a free breakfast!

I ‘graduated’ from Yestermorrow in 1984. I did carpentry in Waitsfield for a while before moving back to North Carolina where I’ve been for 30 years, but I still miss Yestermorrow.

My company Wood Wise does design/build remodeling in Raleigh. The Yestermorrow training was my setup for approaching home renovation with different words and different ideas, for bringing psychology to remodeling, for being an advocate for personalizing your space to enjoy life more.

Yestermorrow shaped my career by feeding me rich ideas when I was young and eager to learn. I appreciate getting the Yestermorrow bump. Keep up the great work! The ripple effect is still going in students from years ago.”

  • Award-winning Design

These homeowners asked Wood Wise to help reconfigure and remodel their master bathroom. By flipping the master closet and the master bathroom, our designer Kathy was able to expand the bathroom into the beautiful space below. Kraftmaid cabinets with the tower on the vanity provide plenty of storage and the wood plank-look porcelain tile is heated to give warmth during the cold winter months. This inspired designed was awarded Best Bathroom in the 2014 STAR awards.

Thanks to all who attended our free remodeling presentation on Saturday!  Hank and Kathy did a great job of sharing what to do and what not to do when remodeling along with the latest trends in kitchens and bathrooms. We had great participation from the attendees who asked good questions, talked to us about their projects, and enjoyed seeing our showroom. Our next class will be in February, 2015. Don’t miss out! • We’re celebrating!

All four of our entries into the 2014 STAR Awards were chosen as “Best” in their class!! The STAR Awards, sponsored by the Remodelers Council of Wake county, are presented based on great design, attention to detail, and great construction, along with the homeowners’ level of satisfaction. A group of visiting judges go to each entry home to determine the winners. We want to thank our homeowners for allowing us to design and build such award-worthy projects. They are the real winners.

  • Making A Statement

A cool backsplash can really make a great design statement in a kitchen. Our designer Kathy guides our clients through the selection process at Byrd Tile to help them make good color and pattern decisions that they will enjoy for a long time. Here are a few backsplashes our homeowners have chosen:  all different,    all beautiful.

  • Backyard Retreat

The homeowners’ old deck was unappealing and rarely used. So they turned to Wood Wise to design a beautiful screen porch.  With protection from rain and made inviting with a bluestone floor and stone fireplace, the porch has become a place of relaxation for these homeowners. Here is their comment on working with Wood Wise on this project:

“The staff is extremely professional, creative and attentive to all details. They are flexible and resourceful in solving problems or issues that arise during the construction process.”

  • Inspired Design

In this recently completed Wood Wise master bathroom project, our designer Kathy Walker worked with the homeowner to design this stunning backdrop to the new slipper tub. The porcelain crema marfil-look tile surrounds the wide glass mosaic stripe, all from Byrd Tile. Imagine relaxing with a good book in this gorgeous setting!
