Chilly temperatures made for a perfect soup night at Urban Ministries of Wake County’s Stone Soup. Delicious soups were offered by area chefs for sampling and taking home. The handmade pottery was beautiful and many local citizens in need were helped in the process. Here is Hank awaiting his sample of this chef’s soup (what number bowl was that, Hank?!). He and wife Beth enjoyed the evening seeing old friends and making new ones.

All proceeds go to Urban Ministries for the many services they provide for our local citizens in need. Homeowners remodel their homes for various reasons: to build an addition, make better use of existing space, make rooms beautiful, and more. The design-build process Wood Wise uses allows us to listen closely to what homeowners are wanting to achieve and provide solutions. These homeowners had an unfinished basement they wanted to finish and utilize in several ways. Along with a kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms, they wanted a place with a tub and storage to devote completely to grooming their show dogs. Our designers raised the tub for back comfort and provided lots of cabinets for convenient storage. The dogs are happy and the homeowners are happy. That makes us happy, too.
As part of a larger renovation project, Wood Wise opened up this family room while remodeling the kitchen. New hardwood floors, warm KraftMaid cabinets, lots of light, and new granite countertops are just some of the features that make this space a gathering place for family and friends. Hank’s philosophy on remodeling continues to ring true: improving your home improves your life.
These homeowners wanted their 1920’s era cottage to retain its distinctive vintage flavor while updating their kitchen. Wood Wise’s designer, Kathy, suggested this custom American Cherry checkerboard pattern breakfast bar to provide a stylish place for homework and meals. The KraftMaid bead board dove white cabinets look great with the turned table legs.

As a graduate of Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Vermont, Hank Wall has used his experience and training there to shape Wood Wise Design & Remodeling. In the 2014/15 school course catalog, Hank was featured in the alumni profiles. Here’s what Hank has to say about his time at Yestermorrow and its impact on his business:
“I was a 30-year old carpenter when I moved to Vermont in 1981 and started working for Yestermorrow. The school was an infant and local experts were teaching building and design. Mac Rood, Jim Sanford, David Sellers, Kathy Meyer, Bill Maclay and, of course, John Connell were all there in Warren, sharing what they knew with folks from all over the country. I was paid enough to qualify as staff but I was clearly a student of design/build. It was the best job in town – and it came with a free breakfast!
I ‘graduated’ from Yestermorrow in 1984. I did carpentry in Waitsfield for a while before moving back to North Carolina where I’ve been for 30 years, but I still miss Yestermorrow.
My company Wood Wise does design/build remodeling in Raleigh. The Yestermorrow training was my setup for approaching home renovation with different words and different ideas, for bringing psychology to remodeling, for being an advocate for personalizing your space to enjoy life more.

These homeowners asked Wood Wise to help reconfigure and remodel their master bathroom. By flipping the master closet and the master bathroom, our designer Kathy was able to expand the bathroom into the beautiful space below. Kraftmaid cabinets with the tower on the vanity provide plenty of storage and the wood plank-look porcelain tile is heated to give warmth during the cold winter months. This inspired designed was awarded Best Bathroom in the 2014 STAR awards.
