Why remodel?
Remodeling instead of moving is one way of preserving roots in a world of constant change. If you love your house, neighbors, yard, and neighborhood but need more space or better configured space, consider remodeling instead of moving.
Moving is a huge effort and expense. Moving into a new home usually puts you into a bigger house further from your friends with a bare bones yard. You start over with plants and neighbors. Moving into a new older home typically involves some remodeling to make it appropriate for how you live.
Staying in your home allows you to keep the good parts of your life and improve those parts of your house that dont work for you. You get to customize the house, add what you feel is lacking, and fix the problems while keeping the garden and the neighborhood.
Why use a contractor?
On small jobs like a deck where only one type of skilled worker such as a carpenter is needed, you might want to consider playing the role of general contractor yourself. Larger jobs require expert, on-site management on virtually a full-time basis. Even if you have the time, you may lack the expertise needed to keep your job moving forward smoothly. The money you save by not hiring a contractor could quickly be eaten up by unexpected costs. And who wants that.
