Communication is key
Does the remodeler . . .
Respond promptly to your calls? (Remember, this is the dating phase.)
Emphasize good service and developing a trusting relationship with you?
Listen to you and understand your needs based on his/her answers to your inquiries?
Interview Previous or Present Clients
Ask to see projects similar to yours.
Does the quality of work measure up to your standards?
Ask the homeowners if they would hire the company again.
Ask the homeowners if the remodeler was easy to talk to and fair.
Ask the past customer if the company completed the project within budget and within an appropriate schedule.
When calling references of design-build companies, remember to ask past clients about the quality of design as well as the construction experience.
Make the Decision
Ask yourself if you feel comfortable with the remodeler.
Ask for an estimate for the work outlined. (Many professional remodelers charge for this estimating time.) We do not like Time and Materials billing and recommend that you choose a Fixed Bid contract.
Ask the remodeler to explain company procedures to you.
Ask for a sample of the companys typical Specifications. Is it detailed and thorough?
Select the remodeler with the best track record and experience, with whom you feel you will enjoy working. Your home and your familys peace of mind are too important to entrust to anyone but a professional remodeler.
