Before You Meet With a Remodeler
Develop an idea of what you want to do.
Collect magazine pictures of what you like.
Determine your budget.
Get referrals from friends, coworkers, architects, home inspectors, the local NAHB Remodelers, or your local Home Builders Association.
Questions To Ask
Does the remodeler have track record of successful projects similar to yours?
Does he or she have a list of recent clients for you to contact? (Not just one happy client from two years ago.)
Can you get a list of the remodelers building materials suppliers? (Check his/her credit record for an indication of financial stability.)
Does the remodeler have a trustworthy reputation with peers, customers, and others?
How long has the remodeler been in business?
Is he/she licensed?
Does the remodeler provide design/build services or want you to provide plans?
Does the contractor have a showroom for cabinets or other featured items?
Is there a retainer or cost for design, consultation, and estimating?
What is the remodelers backlog? What is the next start date for a new project?
Can the remodeler provide you with a sample of his/her contract to review?
